History Of Santa Claus



Santa Claus is a story of story. The charming Santa is mythical character loved by all. Whenever we think about Christmas a merry grandfather-like smiling face come to our mind as dear Santa Claus.

The concept of Santa Claus came as such popular figure by the mid-to-late 19th centuries. Today's Santa Claus is the American adaptation of Santa Claus. In the 17th century, American Santa Claus is brought in the New York City by adapted the Dutch version, Sinter Klaas.

The historical roots of Santa Claus, one must go very deep in the past. Basically it is the combination of many mythical character and legends. But most known figure behind Santa Claus is Bishop Nicholas of Smyrna (Izmir), who is said to be lived in a village Patara of Myra, which is now in Turkey. Nicholas lived in the 4th century A.D. He was very rich, generous, and loving toward children.



One of the most popular story of St. Nicholas is that he helped three poor sisters with dowries so that they can be married and saved them to be sold to a slavery by their father. The Orthodox Church later raised St. Nicholas, miracle worker, to a position of great esteem

History of Santa Claus took a new shape in 1823 in the poem A Visit From Saint Nicholas more commonly known as 'The Night Before Christmas' by writer Clement Clarke Moore, gave the definition of todays Santa. In the poem Moore included details as,-

  • the names of the reindeer

  • Santa Claus's laughs, winks, and nods of Santa Claus

  • How he enters in the home

  • There he also ,mentioned an elf who looks after the reindeer

  • The American image of Santa Claus was illustrated by the famous painter, Thomas Nast. He immortalised Santa in the Christmas issues of Harper's magazine from the 1860s to the 1880s. Nast also added some details of Santa's workshop, and Santa's list of the good and bad children. Santa Claus was more popularised in the year of 1931 in the illustrations of Coca-Cola advertisements in America.
